For the second consecutive year, the opening round of the IRC is none other than the most famous and prestigious event in the sport’s history. The varied route takes crews through some spectacular mountain stages in the Ardeche and Alpes Maritimes region, including the legendary Col de Turini.
This event was new to the IRC in 2009 but has been established locally for some time. With fast and breathtaking gravel roads, this rally is based at the Curitiba race track at the same time as the corresponding World Touring Car Championship round.
Rally Argentina has been well-established on the international motorsport calendar for a number of years. The event features soft gravel roads and variable weather conditions, making it an epic challenge for every driver. All the crews are assured of a very warm welcome from the country’s famously enthusiastic rally fans.
The rally takes place on roads close to the chic resorts of the Costa Smeralda: Sardinia’s playground of the rich and famous. The stages are made up of sandy gravel surfaces, which can expose big rocks as the rally progresses. Breath-taking scenery makes this Mediterranean event a favourite of fans and photographers.
Based in the centre of the beautiful and historic town of Ypres, this event has a long tradition of a great atmosphere and excellent promotion. The demanding asphalt roads require maximum concentration from the drivers, with several traps and ditches that can catch out the unwary.
Having made its debut on the full IRC series last year, the event now makes a welcome return in 2010. The rally is run on twisty gravel roads that afford spectacular views over the island’s coastline, making it a firm favourite amongst spectators and photographers.
This classic asphalt event takes place against the beautiful backdrop of the island of Madeira, with flowers and spectacular views at every turn. Thousands of spectators crowd the streets of Funchal for the spectator superspecial that is a highlight of the event.
The most famous rally in Eastern Europe always has thousands of spectators and a full entry list. The demanding asphalt roads of the Czech Republic test the skills of the crews and their powers of concentration. There is a wide mix of stages, from slow and technical sections to flat-out sections through the forest.
This event now celebrates its third season as part of the IRC but it has been a mainstay of the renowned Spanish Rally Championship for many years. The rally is based in Oviedo – a centre for motorsport in Spain thanks to Formula 1’s Fernando Alonso – and covers a variety of fast and twisty asphalt stages.
One of the most famous names from the World Rally Championship uses the well-known mountain roads above the glamorous town of Sanremo. The event traditionally opens with some long night stages on Thursday, adding yet another thrilling dimension to the IRC.
The Rally of Scotland was new to the IRC in 2009 but proved to be an instant hit with all the crews. The quick gravel stages are almost certain to be made more difficult by uncertain weather conditions, adding to the challenge of this legendary event that runs through spectacular scenery.
The Cyprus Rally distinguishes itself by having the lowest average speed of any event on the IRC, thanks to some tight and twisty stages held on demanding surfaces. However, this is just one aspect of the Cyprus Rally, as it is one of just two IRC events in 2010 that will feature both asphalt and gravel.
