23 October 2012 11:58 How Ronde night stage pace helped Basso to Sanremo glory Is this the moment when Giandomenico Basso made victory on Rallye Sanremo his?

Basso is pictured on the famous Ronde night stage on route to first place on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier recently.

He was 12.9s faster than his closest rival over the demanding 44-kilometre test in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta RRC to extend his advantage from 12.7s to an impressive 25.6s heading into the final day of the asphalt event.

“It was fantastic,” said Basso’s co-driver Mitia Dotta of the Italian’s effort behind the wheel. “Certainly Giandomenico has always gone well at night and on that stage. We were able to make the difference and for sure it was an important part of building this victory. We had no problems and managed to achieve a good result on this stage. It was certainly one of the key parts, if not the key parts of this victory.”

Basso’s eventual victory in Sanremo was his sixth in the IRC and his second of 2012. It moved him into fourth place in the drivers’ standings.

The IRC concludes on the Cyprus Rally from 2-4 November.
